Trinidad November 2019

Post here if you are going to a country or area where leaf cutters are found, if you are visiting a zoo or museum, or going anywhere that has these ants in the wild or in captivity.

Trinidad November 2019

Post by Acromyrmexbob » Tue Sep 17, 2019 7:40 am

Just bought ticket to go to Trinidad on 5th November to check on house and collect ants. Good time to go, 4 months after nuptial flight, middle of wet season, hopefully lots of Atta, and the usual haul of Acromyrmex.
Will take lots of pics and will post events as they happen.

Hi, Ive got a house in Trinidad, I go there loads of times per year to bring back Leaf Cutters. Next year, around June / July I plan to move there permanently and travel back to UK to work, rather than the other way around. Its my grand plan for working towards something! Yes I will post pics of trip after Ive been.

Everything is on track for the Trinidad trip. First colonies since May, so no stock of smaller colonies just now. Should be a good time to be there, rains started in July, nuptial flights July August, new colonies formed then, by November there should be loads of new colonies. If you leave it until the dry season, most of the colonies are cooked!

Packing for the trip! Leaving middle of night, Monday night. Getting everything together. Not exactly a tick list, more of a list inside my head. Always forget something though!!

Day 1 in trinidad.
Spent the day speaking with builders on my house, fixing some problems with walls in wrong place etc. Then I went to airport to book the frfeight box for next Tuesday so I can fly my ants. Next along to Wildlife Department to finalise the permits and then to agent to make arrangements for shipping. The first day of any trip is always an admin day. You cant go collecting if you cant take them home so in many ways today is the most important day of the trip!! Start collecting tomorrow!

Back in London, 300 colonies of leaf cutters in transit through Gatwick, will probably be at animal reception by now getting inspected. I am on a bus to Heathrow Airport for my flight to Edinburgh. Ants will arrive tonight. I will post pics tonight!
