I dont get why they should be so bothered, it grows like....well privet, they are only going to cut it back themselves several times during the growing season, some people just like to moan i suppose. I do know a few things that could be said none of which are very polite and maybe a little confrontational.
ants i keep:-
Atta cephalotes
Polyrhachis dives
Camponotus cruentatus
Camponotus ligniperdus
Camponotus barbaricus
Formica cunicularia
Messor barbarus
Lasius niger

I knocked on a women's 4x4 as she was coming out the drive to ask if I could have some of her Aucuba, she was like" yeah whatever, help yourself" I take it from the street as I'm passing and people give me right evils but say nothing! I'd tell them to wind their decking neck in to be honest!

My wife gets mortified when I ask her to pull over at the bush for a raid, I can see her sliding under the steering wheel. I'm not phased now but I was at the start of my leaf crime career lol.

i do most of my raiding at night whilst walking my dog, people seem less willing to be abusive when you have a 6 stone bull terrier with you
