A strategic mess or just lazy ants?

Post by EmmaBobson » Wed Feb 13, 2019 2:51 pm

For some reason my ants have decided to start dropping off their leaves on the top layer of soil in their nest instead of taking them down to their fungus.
Is there some sort of reason for this?
Or are they just lazy?
They have dropped a leaves here and there before but never to this scale so I just wondered if something's up.

Its not unusual for leaf cutter foragers to cut leaves which the gardiners reject as being unsuitable for fertilising the fungus. So the ants come back to the nest with the leaves, walk with them into the nest and then get sent back out with them. Or it may be that the leaves you used were unsuitable for another reason, they may have been sprayed or perhaps the workers brought too much back and they dumped the surplus!
