Daubz Atta cephalotes

Post by Daubz1977 » Wed Feb 17, 2016 7:42 pm

Hi all,
I thought i would start a journal on here with this colony so i can follow my colonies development and also so if any experienced keeper sees im making a mistake or has any advice they can let me know.
I received my At.cep.mq50.smw.1(1F5).G colony from Britishants today, i was very impressed with the colony and the setup perfect for my colonies current needs and there was only one casualty and that was only because it got trapped in the tub lid.
Getting the colony into the pods took longer than i would have liked, i opened the tub they came in and they rushed me so i ended u with a few ants on my hand biting me which hurt a bit more than i expected it to.
Once i had the colony into the nest they immediately started work on reconstructing the fungus, i have put a rose petal, a couple of sprout leaves and a bit of satsuma peel in the nest area, ive not seen them pay any notice to the sprouts or the rose petal but ive seen a few large workers sat on the orange not 100% sure they were foraging but they spent quite a lot of time on it.
Im going to leave them undisturbed for the rest of the evening now so they can settle in properly, its going to be a struggle i just want to sit and watch them im obsessed with them already, i think i have a new favorite species (my poor polyrhachis dives)
ants i keep:-
Atta cephalotes
Polyrhachis dives
Camponotus cruentatus
Camponotus ligniperdus
Camponotus barbaricus
Formica cunicularia
Messor barbarus
Lasius niger

Fantastic Daubz, is really exciting and a nervy getting your first colony. So your using Sean's pods, are you heating them with heat mats?

Quick update, still no leaf cutting so far but i have seen a few larva being moved around, and workers still seem very busy around the fungus.
