The March 2018 Expedition to Trinidad.

So small colonies are identified by the cones they build. This is more prominent in Atta than Acromyrmex.

and, prior to shipment we store them, as usual, in our ant room over there in Trinidad.

The work at the early part of the week in this room is not particularly onerous but later in the week, as the numbers grow, the preparation of each colony for travel takes several hours per day. This trip yielded around 220 colonies which can take 4 hours per day to care for. In order to avoid using up hunting time I normally do this at night, which makes things difficult because there is no electricity in the room so everything is done under torch light.
