Daubz ant loft

Post your builds, private or commercial set ups. This is where we will document the creation of housing or the planning and construction of projects from scratch. This differs from the Journal Section because this section does not concentrate on the Ants or the other animals that are being kept, this section focuses on the progress of the build.

Hi all,

Im planning on using something like http://www.puffinplastics.co.uk/Acrylic ... oC6AHw_wcB to house my fungus gardens in, I only seem to be able to find them in 2mm or 3mm acrylic, which i think will shatter if i try to drill it, dou you think i would be able to drill the holes i will be needing in this, or does anyone have any recomendations on what else i could use for the job.
Thanks
ants i keep:-
Atta cephalotes
Polyrhachis dives
Camponotus cruentatus
Camponotus ligniperdus
Camponotus barbaricus
Formica cunicularia
Messor barbarus

Acrylic won't shatter. I just recently drilled 32mm holes in a 3mm cylinder without a problem

Some cheaper options for you ;)

Great links Irish! Wish I'd seen the one with the lids.
All I'd add Daubdz avoid glued units as I've found it will develop loads of cracks along the glue line. Moulded is good though.

Fantastic links, really love them.
I noticed the circular units (pods?) are available as waterproof units at extra price so they are advertising that these are not. Something to watch out for.

Yeah good point to note! I sealed mine myself anyway. Never contacted them to find out how much extra for the sealed ones, if anyone does, let us know

I've decided to make my own 30x30x30 boxes for my main setup, I can make each box for around £20.I would make 2 at a time joined to each other by a 32mm tube running in between them, once these 2 are almost full i will add another 2 to the existing ones. I've been looking for adhesive to stick the acrylic for my boxes together i want to use http://clearplastictube.co.uk/Plastic-W ... uct_id=139 it looks like it melts the acrylic together which would give a good hold and i don't think they would be able to pull it apart like they would with silicone... but is this going to be safe to use if not does anyone have any recommendations.
