Ric, the key to keeping your Atta colony manageable despite huge numbers, is the length of the walkway. My recommendation is that you try to make the distance the ants have to walk between the nest and the leaves as long as you can. If you can make the walkway 15 or 20 meters then the ants will take a long time to get to the leaves and back. This reduces the number of trips they can make in a day and slows down the amount of food entering the nest. Using a short walkway like you have shown in your drawings means the foragers will start to pile up leaves in the nest and they will make lots of trips every day. You will not be able to keep up with the food and the nest will outgrow everything you give them. To keep a colony manageable the secret is to extend the walkway, longer and longer, as the colony grows.
