deansie - I have plenty of space for them to expand into so should be ok for a little while yet.
Little concerned because they go mad for silver birch and apple, but that is literally about it. They won't take privet, rose etc. little worried about winter - but I guess if they are desperate it might be different story?!?
The ants have about 5 different entrances they have created so far all around the nest pot, never knew they did this- thought they just had one main entrance before. Interesting to see their habits. They worked together a while back to move a stone out of the nest box which came from the pot Andrew gave me. Was incredible to see them move such a heavy stone, interesting that it was bothering them so much being in their nest box.

Martin, so sorry for the time to reply to this fascinating post. The reason the ants create more than one entrance to their nest is ventillation. The heat of the colonies rises out of the main hole and this also removed air. Replacement, fresh air is drawn in through the side entrances and hence a completely natural air con system is in operation. As conditions change so the ants open and close various entrances to control air flow.
