That fungus is dead Steve, either the peat was to wet or it has something in its ingredients. What's the brand and name and we can have a search.

Here's an article from the States, and I have this feeling that something similar is going on over here with our compost:

Hmmm.

No guarantee this is the cause but does seem likely. Compost has always been a worry to me and i usually get those choir packs for reptiles. But i see people on here have used John innes compost so i tried that. Make sure though that you use the branded John innes and not the other makes with John innes added. Ive used #2 and all is ok.

Interesting Andy, it could be a reason-hard to determine. If you end up using John Innes Steve and there fine well we can maybe draw some conclusions eh.
I was in b&q tonight so had a look at the bag and it says nothing on the packaging.

Ah, says on the product details "Do not use for ericaceous plants" suggests this is alkaline based. Not sure what impact this would have.

If they are on the lid doing something with what they have left of the fungus just let them get on with it i suppose. Perhaps put a small pot over them with a small entrance. See what they have done by tomorrow. I'm really not qualified to make suggestions but i think that's what i would do for the time being.
