Leaf Cutting Ant Forum

Hi there!


Today I start my Journal about the wonderful species Acromyrmex crassispinus.


At the moment I have a queen, a VERY dark cocoon (I think it will hatch in a few hours/days ), some white cocoons, larvae and eggs.

I keep the young queen in a small box with red granules.
It get heated from the side by a 7W heating mat.

But here are some pictures.

The mark on its thorax, is that natural or is it dirt or substrate.

I think this is dirt.

I saw many queens with dirt over them.
I think it's just that, nothing to worry about .

Did not think it was a problem. I have seen this a few times. I think its because the queens emerge just after a rain storm so there can be lots of mud which will stick and then dry forming a shell of sorts. Interesting to see this in other species.
